A

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

GEO

An umbrella term for improving the chance that content is useful to systems that answer questions directly, including search features, voice assistants, and AI tools. Its scope overlaps with GEO; usage varies, and neither term describes a guaranteed placement.

Related: GEO, AI SEO, Featured Snippet

AI Overviews

Platform

An AI-generated feature in Google Search that can summarize information from multiple sources and provide links for further reading. Whether it appears, what it contains, and which sources it shows can vary by query, context, and Google's systems.

Related: GEO, SGE, Google AI

AI SEO

GEO

A broad label for adapting search and content work to discovery experiences that use AI, alongside established SEO practices. Depending on the context, it may include GEO, answer-focused content, entity clarity, technical accessibility, and measurement; it does not guarantee that an AI system will mention a brand.

Related: GEO, AEO, Entity SEO

AI Share of Voice

Measurement

A project-defined measure of how often a brand appears in a selected set of AI answers compared with the brands being tracked. The result depends on the prompts, platforms, dates, repeat method, and rules used to count a mention; it is not a universal platform metric.

Related: Citation Rate, AI Visibility

AI Visibility

Measurement

A practical description of how a brand appears across selected AI-powered discovery surfaces and queries. A useful assessment defines the platforms, prompts, dates, locations, and what counts as a mention, recommendation, or citation rather than treating visibility as one fixed score.

Related: AI Share of Voice, GEO, Citation Rate

B

Brand Entity

Entity SEO

The organization as a distinct real-world entity, together with the names, attributes, products, people, and relationships that describe it. Clear, consistent public information can reduce ambiguity, but does not guarantee rankings or AI citations.

Related: Entity SEO, Knowledge Graph, Entity Authority

Browse Mode

Platform

A commonly used name for an assistant experience that can search or retrieve information from the web while answering. Product names and capabilities change; web access may depend on the product, query, settings, and availability, and should not be assumed for every response.

Related: ChatGPT, Training Data, RAG

C

ChatGPT

Platform

OpenAI's conversational AI product. Depending on the selected experience and current product capabilities, it may use a model's learned information, tools such as web search, or other connected features; outputs can change and are not guaranteed recommendations.

Related: GPTBot, Training Data, Browse Mode

Citation Authority

GEO

An informal term sometimes used to describe the credibility and relevance of sources that mention or substantiate a brand. It is not a standardized Google or AI-platform score, and no single collection of mentions determines whether a system will cite a brand.

Related: AI Share of Voice, Entity Authority, Third-Party Validation

Citation Rate

Measurement

The share of a defined query set in which a brand is cited or named according to an explicit counting rule. A basic calculation is queries with a qualifying mention divided by queries tested, multiplied by 100. Report it with the platform, prompt set, dates, and methodology.

Related: AI Share of Voice, AI Visibility

Claude

Platform

Anthropic's family of AI assistants and models. Available features can differ by product and change over time; an answer may draw on the model and, where available, tools or sources. A brand's presence in Claude responses is not assured by any single SEO action.

Related: ClaudeBot, AI Visibility, LLM

ClaudeBot

Technical

A web crawler user agent published by Anthropic. Anthropic documents separate crawler identities for different purposes, so site owners should consult its current crawler guidance and server logs before deciding how to handle each one. Access does not guarantee that content will appear in Claude.

Related: Claude, GPTBot, robots.txt

Crawlability

Technical

The ability of a crawler to request and access a site's pages and resources. Crawlability is affected by server responses, links, rendering, and crawler-specific rules; being crawlable does not by itself mean a page is indexed, retrieved, cited, or shown in an answer.

Related: robots.txt, GPTBot, Indexability

D

Domain Authority

Technical

A third-party SEO metric name used by some providers to estimate a domain's relative link-based strength. It is not a Google metric or a universal measure of trust, and it should not be treated as proof that a page will rank or be cited by an AI system.

Related: Backlinks, Topical Authority, Citation Authority

E

E-E-A-T

Technical

Google's shorthand for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness, used in its Search quality guidance. It is not a single score or standalone ranking factor; demonstrating experience, clear sourcing, and accountable authorship can help readers assess content quality.

Related: Author Attribution, Topical Authority, AI Overviews

Entity

Entity SEO

A distinct person, organization, product, place, concept, or other thing that can be identified and described. Search and knowledge systems may represent entities and relationships, but each platform's internal representation is different and not fully visible to publishers.

Related: Entity SEO, Knowledge Graph, Brand Entity

Entity Authority

Entity SEO

An informal description of how consistently and credibly an organization is identified across relevant information sources. It is not a standardized public score; evaluate specific evidence, ambiguity, and relationships rather than assuming a single authority value.

Related: Entity SEO, Citation Authority, Knowledge Graph

Entity SEO

Entity SEO

A strategic approach to making an organization, its products, people, and relationships easier to identify and verify across its website and relevant public sources. It can include consistent identity, structured data, useful internal links, and evidence; it does not guarantee Knowledge Graph inclusion or AI visibility.

Related: Brand Entity, Knowledge Graph, Structured Data

F

FAQPage Schema

Technical

Schema.org structured data for a page containing questions and answers supplied by the site. Markup should match visible content and follow current search-engine policies. Valid FAQPage data does not guarantee a rich result, AI citation, or any particular display.

Related: Schema Markup, JSON-LD, AI Overviews

G

Gemini

Platform

Google's family of AI models and related products. Which model, tools, sources, or search features are used depends on the specific Gemini experience and can change; do not assume its behavior is identical to Google Search or AI Overviews.

Related: AI Overviews, AI Visibility

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

GEO

A term for work intended to make useful, well-supported information easier for generative search and answer systems to find, interpret, and potentially use. The scope is still evolving and overlaps with SEO, content strategy, and entity work; no GEO method guarantees a citation or recommendation.

Related: AI SEO, AEO, Entity SEO

Google-Extended

Technical

A robots.txt product token Google provides for publishers to control whether Google may use some crawled content for specified generative-AI training and grounding purposes. It is not a separate crawler and does not control a site's inclusion in Google Search.

Related: Gemini, robots.txt, GPTBot

GPTBot

Technical

An OpenAI crawler user agent that site owners can manage through robots.txt and related access controls. OpenAI documents separate crawlers for different product purposes; allowing or blocking GPTBot alone does not promise or prevent a brand from appearing across every OpenAI experience.

Related: ChatGPT, robots.txt, Browse Mode

H

Hreflang

Technical

An HTML link attribute or HTTP header that identifies alternate language or regional versions of a page. Correct, reciprocal annotations can help search engines understand localized page relationships; they do not replace localized content or guarantee a particular regional result.

Related: Canonicalization, International SEO

I

Indexability

Technical

Whether a page is eligible to be included in a particular search index. Crawl access, directives such as noindex, canonical signals, page quality, and platform policies can affect indexing. AI assistants do not all expose a comparable public index, so assess each system separately.

Related: Crawlability, robots.txt, Meta Robots

J

JSON-LD

Technical

JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data, a format for expressing structured data in a script block. It is widely used for Schema.org markup and supported by Google for many structured data features; publishers should follow each consumer's documentation and keep markup consistent with visible content.

Related: Schema Markup, Structured Data, Organization Schema

K

Knowledge Graph

Entity SEO

Google's knowledge base of entities and their relationships, used in some Search experiences. A Knowledge Panel is one visible feature associated with entity understanding, but panel presence does not expose the full underlying data and lack of a panel does not prove that no entity information exists.

Related: Entity SEO, Knowledge Panel, Wikidata

Knowledge Panel

Entity SEO

An information panel that Google may show in Search for certain entities and queries. Its appearance and contents are determined by Google's systems and may vary; a panel is not a complete view of Google's Knowledge Graph and cannot be guaranteed through SEO or schema.

Related: Knowledge Graph, Entity SEO, Brand Entity

L

LLM (Large Language Model)

Platform

A machine-learning model trained to process and generate language. LLMs can power chat assistants and other features, sometimes alongside search, retrieval, or tools. Different products use different models and systems, so one model's behavior should not be generalized to every platform.

Related: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini

LLM Citation Rate

Measurement

A platform-specific citation-rate measure for a defined set of prompts answered by an LLM-based product. State what counts as a citation or brand mention and report the tested prompts, product mode, date, and sample size; the metric is diagnostic, not a universal benchmark.

Related: Citation Rate, AI Share of Voice, AI Visibility

llms.txt

Technical

A proposed convention for a text file that summarizes a website for language-model tools. Adoption and handling vary, and there is no guarantee that a particular AI system reads or uses it. It is not a replacement for robots.txt, crawlable pages, or accurate site content.

Related: robots.txt, GEO, AI Visibility

M

Microsoft Copilot

Platform

Microsoft's family of AI assistant experiences across products such as Windows, Microsoft 365, Edge, and Bing. Capabilities and sources differ by Copilot product and context; traditional search improvements alone do not guarantee a mention or recommendation.

Related: AI Visibility, GEO, Bing

N

NAP Data

Entity SEO

Name, address, and phone number details used in local business listings. Consistency can matter for organizations with a real-world local presence, but a complete street address or phone listing is not appropriate for every B2B SaaS company.

Related: Entity SEO, Local SEO, Knowledge Graph

O

Organization Schema

Technical

Schema.org structured data describing an organization, such as its name, URL, logo, and supported relationships. Use accurate properties that match visible or otherwise verifiable information. Organization markup can help Google understand and disambiguate an organization, but does not guarantee a Knowledge Panel or search feature.

Related: JSON-LD, Schema Markup, Entity SEO

P

PerplexityBot

Technical

A crawler user agent associated with Perplexity. Site owners can review the provider's current documentation and manage crawler access using published controls. Crawler access does not guarantee that content will be retrieved, cited, or shown in every Perplexity answer.

Related: Perplexity, robots.txt, GPTBot

Person Schema

Technical

Schema.org structured data describing a person, such as an author or founder, when supported by the page and real-world facts. It should not be used to invent credentials or imply a search-quality score; markup does not guarantee ranking or AI attribution.

Related: JSON-LD, E-E-A-T, Author Attribution

R

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)

Platform

A system design in which relevant documents or data are retrieved and supplied to a generative model before or during response generation. Implementations vary; retrieval may use web search or other sources, and retrieval does not ensure that a page is cited in the final answer.

Related: Browse Mode, Perplexity, Training Data

robots.txt

Technical

A text file that gives instructions to crawlers about which URL paths they may request. It is not an access-control or privacy mechanism, and crawler compliance varies. Rules are evaluated by user agent, so check each provider's current documentation rather than assuming one rule controls all AI products.

Related: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Crawlability

S

sameAs

Technical

A Schema.org property that can link an entity to pages that identify the same entity, such as an organization's official profile. Use it only for accurate, unambiguous identity links; it is not a guaranteed Google entity-consolidation instruction or ranking factor.

Related: Organization Schema, Entity SEO, Knowledge Graph

Schema Markup

Technical

Structured data on a webpage, commonly expressed with Schema.org vocabulary, that describes content and entities in a machine-readable way. It can support eligible search features and interpretation, but does not directly guarantee rankings, AI citations, or a particular search display.

Related: JSON-LD, Structured Data, Organization Schema

SGE (Search Generative Experience)

Platform

The name Google used for its Search Generative Experience experiment before the broader introduction of AI Overviews. SGE is now mainly a historical term in older material; current product labels and features should be checked against Google's documentation.

Related: AI Overviews, GEO

Structured Data

Technical

Information organized in a predictable format so software can interpret the entities, properties, or relationships it describes. On websites, structured data often uses Schema.org vocabulary. It should reflect the page and cannot guarantee rich results, rankings, or AI citations.

Related: Schema Markup, JSON-LD, Entity SEO

T

Topical Authority

GEO

A descriptive phrase for a site's demonstrated coverage and experience within a subject area. It is not one standardized Google score; useful, accurate coverage can support readers and search relevance, but does not ensure citation by AI systems.

Related: E-E-A-T, Citation Authority, Content Clusters

Training Data

Platform

Examples and information used to train a machine-learning model. Training sources, update schedules, and model knowledge are not fully visible and differ by provider; appearing in public material does not ensure that a specific model learned, retained, or will repeat a fact.

Related: LLM, ChatGPT, Knowledge Cutoff

W

Wikidata

Entity SEO

A free, collaboratively edited structured knowledge base hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Entries follow community sourcing and notability policies. A listing may be useful when appropriate and independently supportable, but creating one does not guarantee inclusion in Google's Knowledge Graph, a Knowledge Panel, or AI visibility.

Related: Knowledge Graph, Entity SEO, Wikipedia
